La biblioteca UUID se utiliza para generar identificadores únicos para objetos susceptibles de ser accedidos desde fuera del sistema local. Esta biblioteca genera UUIDs compatibles con los creados por la utilidad \fBuuidgen\fP(1) del Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) de la Open Software Foundation (OSF).
